Yes, She's a Lesbian ... Also (Incidentally) a Human.
Over here, Kalinara has a great post about the new Batwoman.
Kalinara is right. No one ever says about a character who we've only seen a few times in someone else's book, "All we know about this character is that she's straight." BTW, we know about the new Batwoman that she's Jewish, sentimental, conflicted about her relationship with Renee in that she is kind of drawn to her but also still angry and hurt.
I would point out that we know she’s human. The reason she doesn’t have much in the way of traits that we can point to is that she’s not some goofy caricature but a person, so we can’t point at her and say “She’s the angry one” or “She’s the goody two shoes.” Like people, we can’t reduce her to simplistic statements. That's a good thing.
Yes, an origin would be great, but is anyone surprised that they thought to wait until her series to give her one? Now, if they’d just get to making that series, I’d be much happier. But seriously, how often do we gripe that a character without her own book isn't fleshed out enough? She's not even a regular character in any book now.
