You're a sexist for calling her a "poor thing."
I sort of agree with Saranga on the point of the black voodoo character, but not on racism. Black people are the main practitioners of voodooism, and like many pagan/shamanistic religions the spells and prayers cast can require the removal of clothes to get closer to nature. I didn't read Young Justice, but if this was the reason Empress got naked, than I really don't see a problem with it.

My main issue with Empress is when you want a black magical character then voodoo is the default answer. It's played out: Papa Midnight, Brother Voodoo, etc. There was one in Preacher, but he was modern. Maybe back in the 90s it wasn't so bad, but I don't want to see anymore of this archetype for awhile.

The deaf character issue is one I'm interested in because I hope to put in a deaf character into a comic series I'm working on. Some of my favorite scenes from my series come from that character, but I've also squelched a bit since she does have a hearing aid (it gives her headaches though, like many deaf people) and she can talk when she needs to.

Panel and page space for deaf communication is an issue, but I do think an artistic compromise can be reached. The problem with Saranga's post is just that she didn't list out an alternative to what she would have liked instead.

Pretty much in agreement with the gay/bi thoughts thing.

And comics are a good forum for education and social issues. I remember reading Punisher issues that told me about the crack problems in inner city areas, and Punisher MAX I learned about the complicated conflicts of the IRA and Eastern European slave trades. Comics are weird and often bring about a higher suspension of disbelief, but they are also a very accessible form of media, they can make someone think about a belief or social issue. It's just that some comics don't do it very well, and it certainly isn't a requirement, but when done well it adds a side of humanity and depth that can be quite invaluable to a story.
